THERE IS / THERE ARE (Il y a)
On utilise there is (singulier) et there are (pluriel) pour parler de la présence de quelqu’un ou quelque chose. On le traduit par ‘il y a’ en français:
- There is a book on the table => Il y a un livre sur la table
- There are two books on the table => Il y a deux livres sur la table
Dans les phrases négatives:
- There is not a book on the table (on peut dire aussi: There is no book on the table)
- There are not two books on the table (on peut dire aussi: There are no books on the table)
Dans les questions:
- Is there a book on the table? => Y a-t-il un livre sur la table ?
- Are there two books on the table? => Y a-t-il deux livres sur la table ?
Pour répondre, on peut dire:
- Yes, there is / No, there isn’t
- Yes, there are / No, there aren’t
Les contractions:
- There is = There’s
- There is not = There’s not / there isn’t
- There are not = There aren’t (attention, there’re n’est jamais utilisé !)
A l’oral, there’s est davantage utilisée que there is:
- There’s a party tomorrow night near the lake => Il y a une fête demain soir près du lac.
- There’s some pizza in the fridge => Il y a de la pizza dans le frigo.
Note: même si c’est incorrect, les anglophones utilisent souvent there’s à l’oral, même s’ils parlent de plusieurs choses:
- There’s four other people waiting outside => Il y a quatre autres personnes qui attendent dehors
There was / There were (il y avait)
Au passé, on utilise there was (singulier) et there were (pluriel) pour dire il y avait:
- There was a spider in the kitchen => Il y avait une araignée dans la cuisine.
- There were children playing in the park => Il y avait des enfants qui jouaient dans le parc
Les constructions avec There / auxiliaire / be
- There will be => Il y aura
- There is going to be => Il va y avoir
- There used to be => Il y avait (dans le sens d’habituellement)
- There could be => Il se pourrait qu’il y ait
- There should be => Il devrait
- There would be => Il y aurait
- There must be => Il doit y avoir
Quelques exemples d’utilisations possibles:
- There will be too many people => Il y aura trop de monde
- There could be a problem => Il se pourrait qu’il y ait un problème
- There should be a solution => Il devrait y avoir une solution
- There must be toilets nearby => Il doit y avoir des toilettes pas loin
ATTENTION !
1 – Pour Exprimer la durée, on utilise Ago
- I went to Tokyo two weeks ago. => Je suis allé à Tokyo il y a deux semaines. (et pas ‘I went to Tokyo there’s three weeks’)
2 – Ne confondez pas: They’re, Their, et There !!!
- They’re (they are) = Ils/elles sont
- Their = leur
