L’ARTICLE DÉFINI THE (LE, LA, LES)
En français, l’article défini est: le, la, les ou l’. En anglais, on utilise simplement THE, aussi bien pour le masculin, le féminin ou le neutre, ou même pour le singulier ou le pluriel (on dit qu’il est invariable).
On dit que c’est un article défini car il indique quelque chose de spécifique. Au contraire, a / an est un article indéfini car il indique quelque chose de non-spécifique.
- the boy => le garçon
- the girl => la fille
- the children => les enfants
- the car => la voiture
- the cars => les voitures
fait intéressant: ‘the’ est le mot le plus utilisé dans la langue anglaise !
QUAND FAUT-IL METTRE THE ?
On utilise THE dans les cas suivants:
POUR DESIGNER UN GROUPE DE PERSONNE
- the Canadians => les canadiens
- the elderly => les personnes agées
- the poor => les pauvres
LES DECENNIES
- She was born in the eighties. => elle est née dans les années 80.
- This is a car from the 1830’s. => c’est une voiture des années 1830.
CE QUE TOUT LE MONDE CONNAIT
- the sun => le soleil
- the moon => la lune
- the stars => les étoiles
- the earth => la terre
LES NOMS GÉOGRAPHIQUES: OCEANS, FLEUVES, GROUPES D’ILES, ET CHAINES DE MONTAGNES
- the Himalayas => l’Himalaya
- the Nile => le Nile
- the Alps => les Alpes
- the Hudson River => l’Hudson
- the Indian Ocean => L’océan Indien
- the Pacific Ocean => l’océan Pacifique
- the Rocky Mountains => les montagnes rocheuses
- the Arctic => l’Arctique
- the Dead sea => la mer morte
LES NOMS DE FAMILLE AU PLURIEL
- the Simpsons => les Simpson (la famille Simpson)
AVEC LES NOMS DE MONUMENTS
- the Louvre
- the Eiffel Tower
AVEC LES NOMS DE JOURNAUX
- the Guardian
- the New York Times
- the Sun
LES NOMS DE PAYS AU PLURIEL
- the United States of America => Les Etats-Unis d’Amérique
- the Netherlands => les Pays-Bas
- the United Kingdom => Le Royaume-Uni
- the Philippines => les Philippines
L’accord se fait généralement au singulier:
Ex: The USA is a very big country. => Les États-Unis sont un très grand pays.
Article défini (the) ou indéfini (a/an) ?
regardez l’exemple suivant
- Can we go to the park? => spécifique, on connaît déjà le parc où on veut aller.
- Can we go to a park? => non spécifique, ça peut être n’importe quel parc.
Quand faut-il ne PAS mettre THE ?
AVEC LES NOMS DE PAYS ET DE CONTINENTS
- China is a very big country.
- She’s just returned from Italy.
- Asia is bigger than Africa.
AVEC LES NOMS DE LANGUES
- French is spoken in Belgium.
- English uses many words of Latin origin.
- Japanese is a beautiful language.
AVEC LES NOMS DE REPAS
- Lunch is my favorite meal. [
the lunch is my favorite meal = FAUX]
- I like to eat breakfast in the morning. [I like to eat
the breakfast in the morning. = FAUX]
AVEC LES TITRES COMBINES A UN NOM
- President Obama is traveling to Japan.
- Prince Charles is Queen Elizabeth’s son.
On peut dire ‘The Queen visited Paris for the first time’ car on ne dit pas son prénom.
AVEC LES PROFESSIONS
- Engineering is a well-paid career.
- He’ll probably study medicine.
AVEC LES NOMS INDENOMBRABLES
- Rice is an important food in Asia.
- Milk is often added to tea in England.
- War is destructive.
AVEC LES NOMS DE MONTAGNE, DE LACS ET D’ILES
- Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
- He lives near Long Island.
- Have you been to Lake Michigan?
AVEC LES NOMS DE RUES, GARES ET AÉROPORTS
- Can you show me where is Oxford Street?
- Victoria Station is in the centre of London.
- They’re flying into Charles de Gaulle.
AVEC LES ENDROITS PUBLICS (INSTITUTIONS)
- aller a l’école => Go to school [go to the school = FAUX ]
- aller au travail => Go to work [go to the work = FAUX ]
- aller à l’hôpital => Go to hospital [go to the hospital = FAUX ]
- rester au lit => Stay in bed [stay in the bed = FAUX ]
- être à la maison => Be at home [be at the home = FAUX ]
NOTE
Pour les saisons, on peut mettre ou ne pas mettre THE, les deux sont corrects:
